Migration Management

The Gambia Immigration Department is the lead agency in the management of migration. Migration has become multi-dimensional in recent times. To deal with this phenomenon, all concerted efforts are required from all stake holders since migration issues are cross cutting. In this drive, The Gambia Immigration Department established a unit that deals with matters relating to migration.

The unit works and cooperates with other institutions both at national, regional and international levels on matters concerning migration. Accordingly, The Migration Unit was established in 2010. The unit oversees and coordinates all entries and departure into and out of the country. The key functions of the unit includes the following:

  • Intercept persons intending to embark on irregular migration;
  • receive returnees and deportees through our land borders and airport respectively;
  • Facilitate the re-integration processes of migrants;
  • Prepare and keep data on all irregular migration activities, sensitize the general public on the impact of irregular migration and help to guide and counsel returnees, deportees and intercepted persons;

The unit has successfully installed the Migration Information and Data Analysis System (MIDAS) at seven major entry points across the country..The MIDAS system is a sophisticated modern technology designed to capture passenger information and data on automated real time basis including travel histories.
